Why We Don’t Need More Prophets?
We do not need more prophets because the message of Islam, as revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), is complete, universal, and preserved for all time. The Qur’an explicitly affirms his status as the Seal of the Prophets (Qur’an 33:40), ensuring that no further revelation is required. Unlike previous scriptures that were lost or altered, the Qur’an remains unchanged, and the teachings of the Prophet (peace be upon him) are meticulously documented in Hadith and Seerah. Additionally, human civilization has evolved into a global society, and Islam provides comprehensive guidance adaptable to all times and places. With divine wisdom perfectly preserved, the role of prophethood has concluded, leaving us with the responsibility to uphold and implement the final revelation.
1. The Finality of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him)
The finality of the Prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him) is an established and unanimously accepted doctrine in Islam, based on clear evidence from the Qur’an and Hadith. The Qur’an states:
“Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets. And Allah has full knowledge of all things.” (Qur’an 33:40)
This verse explicitly declares that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the last Prophet. The term Khatam an-Nabiyyin (Seal of the Prophets) signifies the completion and closure of the chain of Prophethood. Numerous Hadith reinforce this belief. The Prophet (peace be upon him) himself stated:
“My example and the example of the Prophets before me is like that of a man who built a house and completed it except for one missing brick. People would walk around it and admire it but say: ‘If only this brick were in place!’ I am that last brick, and I am the Seal of the Prophets.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 3535)
This finality signifies that no further prophets are needed because the divine guidance has been completed and perfected for all time.
2. The Evolution of Human Civilization
Human civilization has undergone a long process of psychological, social, economic, and technological evolution. Early human societies were based on basic survival, such as hunting and cave dwellings, followed by the establishment of agricultural communities. Over time, humans progressed towards developing cities, empires, global trade, and corporate farming.
Initially, prophets were sent to specific tribes or communities, addressing their localized concerns. However, with human advancement, civilizations became interconnected. The era of isolated societies transitioned into an era of global influence, requiring a universal message rather than regionally bound revelations.
3. Universality of the Teachings of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him)
Unlike previous prophets, who were primarily sent to their own people, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent with a message for all of humanity. The Qur’an declares:
“And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.” (Qur’an 21:107)
Previous prophets, such as Moses (peace be upon him) and Jesus (peace be upon him), were sent to specific nations. Prophet Moses was sent to liberate the Israelites from Pharaoh and establish a regional state in Palestine. His mission was not universal but rather focused on the Israelites:
“And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.” (Exodus 3:9-10)
Similarly, Jesus (peace be upon him) affirmed his mission as being exclusive to the Israelites:
“I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.” (Matthew 15:24)
In contrast, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) provided a comprehensive and timeless guidance that is applicable to all eras, transcending geographical, racial, and national boundaries.
4. Preservation of the Qur’an and Hadith
One of the primary reasons why new prophets are unnecessary is the complete preservation of the Qur’an. Unlike previous scriptures, which were lost or distorted over time, the Qur’an has remained unchanged since its revelation:
“Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur’an and indeed, We will be its guardian.” (Qur’an 15:9)
The Hadith and Seerah (biography) of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) have also been meticulously documented. The lives of earlier prophets, in contrast, are known only through fragmented accounts, many of which have been altered over time.
The lack of reliable historical records for previous prophets necessitated the coming of new messengers. However, with the preservation of the final revelation and the detailed documentation of the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), there is no need for additional prophets.
5. The Living Language of the Qur’an
Another major reason why new prophets are unnecessary is the survival of the Arabic language in which the Qur’an was revealed. Ancient prophetic messages were given in languages that either became extinct or underwent transformations that made them inaccessible to later generations.
For example:
- Hebrew, the language of Moses (peace be upon him), became a dead language for centuries before its so-called modern revival.
- Aramaic, the language of Jesus (peace be upon him), is nearly extinct today.
- The languages of other ancient scriptures, such as Sanskrit and Sumerian, are no longer spoken in their original forms.
In contrast, Arabic remains a living language, spoken by millions worldwide with its classical form intact. This ensures that the Qur’an remains accessible in its original form, preventing the need for another prophet to revive its message.
Conclusion
The finality of Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) Prophethood is not just a doctrinal belief but a logical conclusion based on the completion of divine guidance, the evolution of human civilization, the universality of his teachings, the preservation of the Qur’an and Hadith, and the continued existence of the Arabic language. Unlike previous eras, where prophets were needed to guide specific communities, the comprehensive message of Islam provides enduring guidance for all people, making the coming of new prophets unnecessary. Instead of waiting for a new messenger, it is our responsibility to implement and spread the teachings of the last and final Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
