The Islamic doctrine of the finality of prophethood or finality of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), encapsulated in the Arabic term “Khatamun Nabiyyin,” asserts that no prophet will be appointed after the esteemed birth of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This theological principle is firmly rooted in the teachings of the Quran, specifically articulated in Surah Al-Ahzab (33:40), which unequivocally designates Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as the last and ultimate messenger of Allah.
This belief signifies the completion and perfection of divine guidance through the revelation of the Quran, providing comprehensive and timeless instructions for humanity. It underlines the idea that the prophetic mission reached its culmination with Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), safeguarding the purity and integrity of the divine message.
Embracing the finality of prophethood not only underscores the unity of the Muslim Ummah but also highlights the preserved nature of the Quran, ensuring that the guidance offered by Prophet Muhammad remains unaltered and applicable for all generations to come. This principle forms a foundational aspect of the Islamic faith, emphasizing the conclusive nature of prophethood with the advent of Prophet Muhammad S.A.W.
The Quran explicitly states in Surah Al-Ahzab (33:40):
“Muhammad is not the father of [any] one of your men, but [he is] the Messenger of Allah and last of the prophets. And ever is Allah, of all things, Knowing.”
This verse emphasizes the finality of prophethood, indicating that there will be no prophet after Muhammad (peace be upon him). The concept is also reinforced by numerous sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, known as Hadiths, in which he clearly stated that he is the last in the line of prophets.
The finality of prophethood is significant in several aspects:
- Completion of Guidance: Muslims believe that the message brought by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is complete and comprehensive. The Quran revealed to him, is considered the final and unaltered revelation from God, containing guidance for all aspects of life until the end of time.
- Perfection of Religion: With the finality of prophethood, Islam is seen as the perfected and final religion. It is believed that God, in His wisdom, has provided humanity with a complete and universal code of conduct through the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
- Preservation of the Message: The belief in the finality of prophethood also implies the preservation of the message. Unlike previous revelations, which were subject to alteration and corruption over time, Muslims believe that the Quran is preserved in its original form, without any additions or omissions.
- Unity of the Muslim Ummah: The concept of the finality of prophethood helps maintain the unity of the Muslim community (Ummah). Since there is no expectation of a new prophet, there is no room for division or conflicting claims of prophethood within the Muslim community.
The belief in the perfection and timelessness of Prophet Muhammad’s teachings lies at the core of Islamic faith, rendering the appointment of a new prophet unnecessary in the eyes of Muslims. According to Islamic doctrine, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was chosen as the final messenger by God, and his teachings, enshrined in the Quran, are considered complete and all-encompassing. The Quran itself attests to its universality and perpetuity, with guidance applicable to diverse contexts and periods. As such, the comprehensive nature of Prophet Muhammad’s message is believed to address the spiritual, ethical, social, and legal dimensions of human existence, leaving no room for additional revelations or messengers.
