Operation Bunyan-ul-Marsoos is the codename for Pakistan’s military counteroffensive launched on May 10, 2025, in response to Indian missile strikes on Pakistani military bases. The operation’s name is derived from a Quranic phrase meaning “a solid wall of lead,” symbolizing unity and strength in defense.
In retaliation, Pakistan initiated Operation Bunyan-ul-Marsoos, targeting Indian military installations such as the Pathankot airfield, a BrahMos missile storage facility in Punjab, and the Udhampur airbase in Indian-administered Kashmir. The operation involved the use of drones and Fattah-1 ballistic missiles.
The term “Bunyan ul Marsoos” originates from the Quran, translating to “a solid wall of lead.” This phrase conveys the idea of unity and steadfastness among those who fight in the cause of Allah, likening them to a firm and unyielding structure. By adopting this name, Pakistan emphasizes its resolve and cohesion in the face of aggression.
Important Targets Destroyed
In retaliation for the Indian missile strikes on its airbases, Pakistan launched Operation Bunyan-ul-Marsoos, a calibrated military response aimed at key strategic targets inside Indian territory. The operation was designed not only to demonstrate Pakistan’s deterrent capability but also to signal that any breach of its territorial integrity would be met with forceful consequences. Central to the operation were precision strikes on three high-value military installations across northern India. No civilian area was targeted.
Operation Bunyan Ul Marsoos – Targeted Indian Military Sites
The Pathankot airfield, located in the Indian state of Punjab near the border with Pakistan, was one of the primary targets. This airbase is strategically important due to its role in housing frontline fighter jets and serving as a launch pad for rapid air response operations. Reports from the area indicated multiple loud explosions, which were followed by sirens and emergency lockdowns. Civilian access in and around the area was restricted as security forces cordoned off the zone.
Another significant target was the Udhampur air force base, situated in the Jammu region of Indian-administered Kashmir. Udhampur is the headquarters of India’s Northern Command and plays a crucial role in overseeing Indian military operations along the Line of Control (LoC). The attack here was interpreted as a symbolic as well as strategic blow, aiming to undermine Indian military command in the sensitive Kashmir theater.
The third and perhaps most sensitive site targeted was a BrahMos missile storage and logistics facility, reportedly located in a secure compound in the hinterland of Punjab. The BrahMos missile, a supersonic cruise missile developed jointly by India and Russia, is a key component of India’s offensive capabilities. Damaging or threatening such infrastructure signaled Pakistan’s intent to neutralize high-value weapon systems in the early stages of any wider escalation.
Reports have emerged claiming that Pakistan destroyed an Indian S-400 air defense system during its recent military operations. According to Pakistani state media and outlets, the Pakistan Air Force targeted and destroyed the S-400 system in Adampur, Punjab, using hypersonic missiles launched from JF-17 Thunder aircraft. These reports suggest that the destruction of the S-400 was part of Pakistan’s Operation Bunyan Ul Marsoos, a retaliatory campaign following Indian missile strikes on Pakistani airbases.
Following these strikes, Indian authorities issued red alerts across several northern states. Night-time blackout orders were imposed, and air defense systems were put on high alert amid fears of further missile or drone attacks. Civilian panic was reported in areas close to the blast zones, with local hospitals placed on emergency footing in anticipation of potential casualties.
The conflict has led to heightened military alertness on both sides, with reports of intercepted drones and missile strikes. Civilians in affected regions have been advised to stay indoors, and airspaces have been closed. International actors, including the United States and China, have called for de-escalation and a return to diplomatic dialogue.
The operation marked the most severe military confrontation between the nuclear-armed neighbors in nearly three decades. Both nations mobilized additional troops to their borders, with India activating its reserve Territorial Army. Civilian casualties have mounted to at least 48 since the clashes began. In response to the escalating situation, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened the National Command Authority, which oversees the country’s nuclear policy.
International Reactions
The international community, including the G7, has called for immediate de-escalation and maximum restraint to prevent further destabilization in the region. The G7 foreign ministers emphasized that continued military conflict threatens regional stability.
Operation Bunyan-ul-Marsoos underscores the fragile nature of India-Pakistan relations and the potential for rapid escalation in the region. The situation remains volatile, with both nations on high alert and the international community urging a return to diplomatic dialogue.
