Prophet Muhammad (PBUH): The Icon of Moral Excellence
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stands as the ultimate icon of moral excellence, setting a timeless standard for humanity. His character, praised by Allah in the Qur’an as “truly great” (68:4), was marked by unwavering honesty, compassion, patience, and justice. He was known as As-Sadiq (the Truthful) and Al-Amin (the Trustworthy) even before declaring prophethood. His mercy extended to both friends and foes, forgiving even those who persecuted him. His humility and kindness touched every aspect of his life, from dealing with the poor to leading a powerful nation. As Aisha (RA) described, “His character was the Qur’an” (Sahih Muslim), making him the perfect role model for all seeking righteousness and integrity.
Allah Almighty said:
وَ اِنَّكَ لَعَلٰى خُلُقٍ عَظِیْمٍ
(Qur’an, 68:4)
Translation
“And indeed, you are upon great character.”
(Surah Al-Qalam 68:4)

This verse is a divine testimony from Allah, affirming that Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) possesses an extraordinary level of moral excellence. It highlights several key aspects:
1. Allah’s Direct Praise of the Prophet’s Character
- The phrase وَإِنَّكَ (Indeed, you) emphasizes certainty—Allah is making an absolute statement about the Prophet ﷺ.
- لَعَلٰى (upon) indicates that his character is so high that he is firmly established upon it.
- خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ (great character) signifies unparalleled moral excellence, beyond ordinary human virtue.
This verse is considered one of the highest praises ever given to any human being in divine revelation.
2. The Prophet’s Character as the Embodiment of Islam
- The Prophet ﷺ was sent as a practical model of Islamic teachings. His words, actions, and manners reflected the true essence of the Qur’an.
- Aisha (RA), the wife of the Prophet, described him by saying:
“His character was the Qur’an.” (Sahih Muslim)- This means he lived by every command of the Qur’an, making his behavior the perfect example of divine guidance.
3. Examples of His Great Character
The Prophet ﷺ was known for:
- Truthfulness (As-Sadiq) – Even his enemies trusted him.
- Trustworthiness (Al-Amin) – He never betrayed anyone.
- Compassion and Mercy – As mentioned in the Qur’an:
“And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.” (21:107) - Patience in the face of hardship – Despite persecution, he never responded with cruelty.
- Forgiveness – He forgave even those who harmed him, such as the people of Ta’if and Makkah.
4. A Role Model for Humanity
- This verse confirms that the Prophet’s morality is unmatched and that believers should strive to follow his example.
- The Qur’an states:
“Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah, you have an excellent example…” (33:21)
