The Qur’an, also spelled as Quran or Koran, is the holy scripture of Islam, regarded by Muslims as the literal word of God as revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through the Angel Gabriel. It serves as the primary source of guidance for Muslims in matters of faith, practice, and morality. The word “Qur’an” itself means “recitation” or “that which is recited,” emphasizing its oral nature.
1. Revelation and Compilation:
- The Qur’an was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) over a period of approximately 23 years, starting in 610 CE and concluding in 632 CE, the year of his passing. The revelations were given in Arabic and were delivered in various circumstances and settings.
- The Qur’an is divided into chapters called “Surahs,” and each Surah is further divided into verses known as “Ayat.” There are a total of 114 Surahs in the Qur’an, ranging in length and covering a diverse array of topics.
2. Structure and Language:
- The Qur’an is renowned for its eloquence and linguistic beauty. Its verses are known for their rhythmic and melodic qualities, making it a profound piece of Arabic literature. Despite translations being available in numerous languages, the original Arabic text is considered sacred, and the precise meanings can only be fully understood in Arabic.
- Allah Almighty says:
The ˹true˺ believers are only those whose hearts tremble at the remembrance of Allah, whose faith increases when His revelations are recited to them, and who put their trust in their Lord. [Quran, 8:2]
3. Themes and Content:
- The Qur’an covers a wide array of themes, including theology, morality, law, guidance for personal conduct, and narratives about past prophets and communities. The central theme revolves around the oneness of God (Tawhid) and the accountability of human beings in the Hereafter.
- It addresses both individual and collective aspects of human life, guiding on matters ranging from personal ethics to societal justice.
- Allah Almighty says:
Surely this Quran guides to what is most upright and gives good news to the believers—who do good—that they will have a mighty reward. [Qur’an, 17:9]
4. Miraculous Nature:
- Muslims believe that the Qur’an is a miraculous revelation, both in its content and linguistic style. It is considered the ultimate linguistic and literary miracle, challenging humanity to produce anything like it, and remaining unmatched in its linguistic excellence.
- Allah Almighty says:
And if you are in doubt about what We have revealed to Our servant, then produce a sûrah like it and call your helpers other than Allah, if what you say is true. [Qur’an, 2:23]
5. Preservation:
- The Qur’an has been preserved without any alteration since its revelation. Muslims believe that God has taken responsibility for its protection, ensuring that the Qur’an we have today is identical to the one revealed to Prophet Muhammad over 14 centuries ago.
- Allah Almighty says:
It is certainly We Who have revealed the Reminder, and it is certainly We Who will preserve it. [Qur’an, 15:09]
6. Importance in Islam:
- The Qur’an holds a central and revered position in the life of a Muslim. It serves as a source of guidance for daily living, offering solutions to contemporary challenges and providing spiritual nourishment. Muslims are encouraged to recite, memorize, and contemplate the verses of the Qur’an regularly.
7. Memorization (Hifz):
- Many Muslims undertake the noble task of memorizing the entire Qur’an, a practice known as “Hifz.” Individuals who achieve this memorization are highly esteemed in Islamic communities.
8. Interpretation (Tafsir):
- Scholars have produced extensive commentaries, known as Tafsir, to explain the meanings and context of the Qur’anic verses. These commentaries draw upon linguistic analysis, historical context, and other sources to provide deeper insights.
In summary, the Qur’an is more than a religious text for Muslims; it is a comprehensive guide for life, a source of spiritual comfort, and a timeless literary masterpiece. Its impact on the lives of millions spans across continents, cultures, and centuries, embodying a message that transcends time and remains relevant to the human experience.
