Daleel at-Talib: An Introduction
The Hanbali school of Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) is one of the four major schools of Sunni Islam. It originated in the city of Baghdad in the 9th century CE and was founded by Imam
Ahmad ibn Hanbal (may Allah have mercy on him), who is considered one of the
most important scholars of Sunni Islam. The Hanbali school is known for its strict
adherence to the Quran and the hadith, the sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Comprehensive Coverage:
“Daleel at-Talib” is a comprehensive work on Hanbali fiqh that covers a wide range of topics, including ritual purity, prayer, fasting, zakat, pilgrimage, marriage, and inheritance. It is considered one of the most complete works on Hanbali fiqh and is widely studied by students of Islamic law.
Hanbali Perspective:
As a work of Hanbali fiqh, “Daleel at-Talib” is written from the perspective of the Hanbali school of thought. It presents the Mu’atamad opinions of Hanbali scholars on various fiqh issues.
Clarity of Expression:
Imam Mar’i ibn Yusuf al-Karmi al-Hanbali was known for his clear and concise writing
style, and “Daleel al-Talib” reflects this. The work is organized in a logical manner and presents fiqh issues in a clear and easy-to-understand manner.
Over the centuries, “Daleel at-Talib” has been the subject of numerous commentaries and
annotations by Hanbali scholars. These commentaries provide additional insights and explanations of the text and help to clarify some of its more difficult or ambiguous points. Today, “Daleel at-Talib” remains an important text for students of Hanbali fiqh and is widely studied in traditional Islamic seminaries (madrasas) around the world.
Imam Mar’i ibn Yusuf ibn Abi Bakr al-Karmi al-Hanbali (may Allah have mercy on him) was born in the month of RabīʿI in the year 988 AH (corresponding to April/May 1580 CE) in the town of
Ṭūr Karm (Tul Karm), Palestine (Jerusalem). He grew up in a scholarly family and received his early education in his hometown. He studied Hanbali Fiqh with famous Hanbali scholar Imam Musa ibn Ahmad al-Hijjawi (may Allah have mercy on him).
Jerusalem has been an important center of Islamic knowledge and traditions for centuries. The
City has been the site of many important religious events and was the first Qibla for Muslims before the direction of prayer was changed to the Kaaba in Makkah.

During this period, Jerusalem was home to several prominent Hanbali scholars, including Imam Mar’i ibn Yusuf al-Karmi al-Hanbali, who was born in the nearby town of Ṭūr Karm. These scholars contributed significantly to the development and dissemination of Hanbali fiqh, and their works continue to be studied and referenced by scholars today.
Imam Mar’i ibn Yusuf al-Karmi al-Hanbali (may Allah have mercy on him) was known for his extensive knowledge of Hanbali fiqh and hadith. He studied under several prominent Hanbali scholars of his time and became a renowned jurist in his own right. He authored several
important works on Hanbali fiqh, including “Daleel at-Talib,”and “Ghayah al-Muntaha,”. Imam
Mar’i ibn Yusuf al-Karmi al-Hanbali traveled to different cities to study and teach, including Jerusalem, Damascus, and Cairo. He was a respected teacher of Hanbali fiqh and hadith and had many students who went on to become prominent scholars in their own right.
Imam Mar’i ibn Yusuf al-Karmi al-Hanbali (may Allah have mercy on him) passed away in the year 1033 AH (1623-1624 CE) in Cairo, which was then part of the Ottoman Empire. His
works on Hanbali fiqh continue to be studied and are considered important references for students of Islamic law.
