The UNO’s New World Map: How a Change in Cartography Could Change the Way We See the World

For more than four centuries, one particular image of the world has shaped generations' geographical imagination. It has appeared in classrooms, atlases, newspapers, offices and, in modified forms, on digital maps. Yet the map most people recognize as the “world map” contains a fundamental visual distortion: it makes some parts of the world appear far larger than they actually are.

On 4 September 2026, the United Nations General Assembly took an important step toward changing that picture. By a vote of 164 in favour, one against and six abstentions, the Assembly adopted the resolution “Correct the Map: Rebalancing Global Cartographic Representation and Promoting Equitable Representation of the World’s Regions, Particularly Africa.” Togo led the initiative, with support from the African Union. The resolution promotes the use of equal-area map projections, particularly the Equal Earth projection, when the purpose is to compare the actual sizes of continents and countries. It does not legally abolish the old Mercator projection, nor does it prevent its continued use for navigation and other purposes. (United Nations)

The significance of the decision, however, goes well beyond cartography.

As Nature explains in its recent article, “Hello Equal Earth: what the UN’s new world map will change,” the debate concerns not merely how maps are drawn, but how maps influence our understanding of geographical importance, educational knowledge and even the perceived place of different civilizations and regions in the world. 1. The World Map Was Never the World Itself

The first fact that must be understood is surprisingly simple:

There is no completely accurate flat map of the Earth.

The Earth is approximately spherical, whereas a conventional map is flat. Whenever cartographers transfer the curved surface of a globe onto a two-dimensional sheet or screen, something must be distorted.

A projection can preserve one characteristic while sacrificing another:

  • area,

  • shape,

  • distance,

  • direction,

  • angles,

  • or some combination of these.

Therefore, asking whether a map is simply “accurate” or “inaccurate” is incomplete. The better question is:

Accurate for what purpose?

This is precisely why the controversy surrounding the Mercator projection is more complicated than simply saying that the old map was “wrong.”

2. Why Was the Mercator Map Created?

The Mercator projection was introduced by the Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569.

Its extraordinary strength was navigation.

On a Mercator map, lines representing constant compass bearings can be drawn as straight lines. This made the projection highly useful for sailors planning voyages. In an age of European maritime exploration, oceanic navigation and expanding international trade, this was an enormous practical advantage. (Nature)

The problem was the price paid for preserving direction.

As one moves toward the poles, the Mercator projection increasingly enlarges geographical areas. Consequently, countries and continents in the northern and southern high latitudes appear much larger than they actually are.

This distortion is mathematically unavoidable within the projection.

The Mercator map therefore was not originally designed to deceive anyone. It was designed to solve a specific navigational problem.

Its later use as the default mental image of the entire planet, however, created a different problem.

3. The Greenland–Africa Problem

Perhaps the most famous example is Greenland.

On the conventional Mercator world map, Greenland can appear approximately comparable in size to Africa.

But their actual areas are dramatically different.

Africa is approximately 14 times larger than Greenland. (Nature)

This is not a minor visual discrepancy.

Africa is approximately 30.4 million square kilometres, whereas Greenland is about 2.17 million square kilometres.

Yet when millions of students repeatedly encounter a map on which these two regions appear surprisingly similar, the visual impression can become part of their subconscious geographical understanding.

The same principle affects Russia, Canada and northern Europe. They appear considerably larger relative to equatorial regions than they really are.

Meanwhile, Africa, South America and other regions around the Equator appear comparatively diminished.

This is the central issue behind the “Correct the Map” campaign.

4. Does the Mercator Map Make Africa Look Smaller?

Technically, the answer is yes.

But there is an important qualification.

The Mercator projection does not specifically “shrink Africa.” Rather, it enlarges areas increasingly as they approach the poles.

Because Africa lies much closer to the Equator than Europe, Canada and Russia, it appears smaller in comparison.

Thus, the apparent reduction of Africa is a consequence of the enlargement of other regions.

This distinction matters because the problem is mathematical rather than conspiratorial.

Nevertheless, the consequences can become cultural and political.

As Nature reports, geographers have argued that people tend to associate visual size with importance. Maps therefore do more than tell us where places are; they can influence our mental picture of which places appear central, powerful or peripheral. (Nature)

5. Can a Map Influence Political Consciousness?

This is where the debate becomes particularly interesting.

A map appears to be a neutral scientific object.

But every map embodies choices.

What is placed at the centre?

What is enlarged?

What is minimized?

Where does the map begin and end?

Which borders are emphasized?

Which regions are visually prominent?

Which regions occupy the margins?

These decisions do not necessarily represent political manipulation. Often they arise from mathematical, navigational or practical requirements. But repeated visual representations can nevertheless influence human perception.

Geographer Derek Alderman, quoted by Nature, describes maps as “social texts” because they can influence how people imagine the importance, centrality or peripheral position of places. (Nature)

This is particularly significant in education.

A child does not initially understand geographical projection theory. He or she simply sees the map.

If one map is displayed in classrooms for decades, its visual hierarchy can become psychologically familiar.

The map therefore becomes part of what might be called a mental geography of the world.

6. Enter Equal Earth

The alternative promoted by the UN is principally the Equal Earth projection.

Equal Earth was developed in 2018 by cartographers Bojan Šavrič, Bernhard Jenny and Tom Patterson.

Its fundamental objective is different from Mercator's.

Rather than preserving compass directions, Equal Earth is an equal-area projection.

That means that the relative areas of land masses are represented much more accurately.

Africa therefore appears much closer to its true proportion relative to Europe, North America and Greenland.

The projection also attempts to produce a visually balanced world map without the extreme polar stretching associated with some other equal-area projections. (Wikipedia)

The result is striking.

Africa suddenly looks enormous.

South America also appears more substantial.

Europe loses some of its apparent visual dominance.

Russia and Canada become smaller.

Greenland loses its enormous appearance.

The map does not make Africa bigger.

It makes the other regions stop looking artificially enlarged.

That distinction is fundamental.

7. What the New UN Resolution Actually Does

It is important not to misunderstand the UN decision.

The United Nations has not ordered every map in the world to be replaced immediately.

The resolution is non-binding.

It encourages governments, schools, international organizations and technology companies to use projections that accurately represent relative landmass size when that is the purpose of the map. It specifically promotes Equal Earth while also recognizing that other equal-area projections may be appropriate. (United Nations)

The resolution also acknowledges that no single projection can perfectly represent the spherical Earth on a flat surface.

This is a crucial scientific qualification.

The UN is not declaring:

“Equal Earth is the only correct map.”

Rather, the message is closer to:

When we want to compare geographical size, we should use a projection that preserves geographical area.

For navigation, other projections remain preferable.

8. Will the Mercator Map Disappear?

Probably not.

And it should not.

Mercator remains useful for particular technical applications, especially navigation.

The UN resolution explicitly does not challenge the established use of Mercator for maritime and aerial navigation. (United Nations)

This illustrates an important principle of scientific thinking:

A map can be inappropriate for one purpose while being excellent for another.

The Mercator projection is not useless because it distorts area.

It was deliberately designed to preserve direction.

Likewise, Equal Earth is not perfect simply because it preserves area.

It sacrifices other properties.

The correct approach is therefore not to ask:

“Which map is the true map?”

but:

“Which projection is appropriate for this particular question?”

9. What Does Equal Earth Distort?

Equal Earth solves one problem but cannot solve every problem.

Because the Earth is spherical, preserving relative area inevitably means that some shapes, angles and distances are distorted.

Nature points out, for example, that the shapes of some places are altered, with New Zealand appearing stretched diagonally near the edge of the map. (Nature)

This is not a defect unique to Equal Earth.

It is the unavoidable consequence of flattening a globe.

Imagine peeling an orange and attempting to place the peel completely flat without cutting, stretching or deforming it.

You cannot do it perfectly.

The Earth presents essentially the same mathematical problem.

10. Why Africa Led the Campaign

The political leadership behind the resolution came from Africa.

Togo spearheaded the initiative with backing from the African Union. The argument was that the long-standing visual underrepresentation of Africa was not merely an academic cartographic issue but also had consequences for education, perception and the way Africa's significance is understood globally. The African position can therefore be summarized in a simple proposition:

A continent should not appear smaller simply because of the projection chosen to represent the planet.

Togo's Foreign Minister Robert Dussey described the initiative as a question of fairness in how the world is represented, arguing that the perception of a place can influence relationships and partnerships. (UN Transcripts)

This explains why the debate has acquired a much broader meaning.

It is no longer simply a question for cartographers.

It has become part of a wider conversation about representation, colonial history and the intellectual geography of the modern world.

11. The Colonial Dimension

The history of the Mercator projection overlaps with the era of European maritime expansion.

Mercator himself did not design his map as a political manifesto for European colonialism. Its original purpose was navigation.

But the projection subsequently became deeply embedded in a world system dominated by European maritime powers.

As European empires expanded, the Mercator map became increasingly familiar.

Consequently, a mathematical projection created for navigation became part of the visual language through which generations learned about the world.

This creates an interesting historical paradox.

A projection created for technical reasons acquired political and cultural consequences because of the historical circumstances in which it became dominant.

That does not mean that the Mercator projection caused European imperialism.

The historical relationship runs in the opposite direction: European maritime expansion helped make the projection globally influential.

But once the projection became dominant, its distortions could reinforce an existing geographical imagination.

The new UN resolution therefore represents an attempt to separate cartographic convention from inherited cultural perception.

12. Why the Vote Was So Overwhelming

The result of the General Assembly vote was extraordinary:

164 countries voted in favour.
1 voted against.
6 abstained.

The United States was the only country to vote against the resolution, while Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Moldova, Serbia and Ukraine abstained. (UN Transcripts)

The overwhelming vote demonstrates that the issue has attracted broad international support.

However, the objections also reveal that maps can become politically sensitive.

Several countries raised concerns about the representation of disputed territories and national borders.

For example, Ukraine expressed concern about how some Equal Earth representations might depict Ukrainian territory occupied by Russia. Canada, Australia and New Zealand also emphasized that the resolution should have no implications for sovereignty, territorial integrity, national borders or jurisdiction. (UN Transcripts)

This distinction is extremely important.

13. A Projection Does Not Determine Sovereignty

Changing a map projection does not change international borders.

A country does not gain territory because it looks larger on a map.

Nor does another country lose territory because a projection makes it look smaller.

The UN debate concerns the relative visual representation of land area, not the legal status of territory.

The General Assembly's discussion explicitly recognized this distinction. The resolution concerns cartographic representation and does not establish or alter sovereign rights, borders or territorial claims. (UN Transcripts)

This is particularly important in regions where borders are politically disputed.

A technically more accurate area projection cannot resolve a political dispute.

14. The United States and the Ideological Question

The American opposition adds another dimension to the story.

The United States voted against the resolution, characterizing the initiative as ideological. The UN's own account records the American position as describing it as part of a “radical ideological project.” (United Nations)

This disagreement reveals that even apparently technical scientific questions can become politically charged when they intersect with questions of history, identity and power.

One side emphasizes:

scientific accuracy and equitable representation.

The opposing perspective warns against turning cartography into an ideological project.

Both concerns deserve consideration.

The strongest position is therefore neither to romanticize the old map nor to imagine that the new one is politically neutral.

Instead, we should understand the mathematical and historical context of both.

15. What Will Happen in Schools?

Education could be the area where the change becomes most visible.

For generations, students have been exposed to maps in which Greenland appears enormous and Africa comparatively diminished.

A widespread adoption of Equal Earth or another equal-area projection could change that visual experience.

Students would immediately see:

  • the enormous geographical scale of Africa;

  • the substantial size of South America;

  • the relatively small size of Europe;

  • the true proportion of Greenland;

  • the reduced visual scale of Russia and Canada;

  • and the much greater geographical extent of equatorial regions.

This could have an important educational benefit.

Students could begin to understand that visual appearance is not geographical reality.

That is perhaps the most valuable lesson of the entire controversy.

16. The New Map and the Digital Age

The biggest challenge may not be schools.

It may be technology.

Today's global geographical imagination is increasingly formed not by printed atlases but by:

  • smartphones,

  • search engines,

  • satellite imagery,

  • navigation applications,

  • social media,

  • online news,

  • educational platforms,

  • and interactive digital maps.

The UN resolution therefore encourages technology companies to consider more appropriate map projections. (United Nations)

But digital mapping introduces another complication.

Applications such as navigation services need projections that work efficiently with zooming, tiling and navigation calculations.

Consequently, the question is not simply whether Google Maps or another service should “change the world map.”

Different layers and applications may require different projections.

A road-navigation map has different requirements from a classroom map showing continental areas.

17. Why This Matters Beyond Africa

Although Africa is at the centre of the campaign, the issue is not exclusively African.

The Mercator distortion affects the entire planet.

Northern countries are visually enlarged.

Equatorial countries are relatively diminished.

South America, Africa and Southeast Asia can therefore appear smaller relative to northern regions than their actual areas justify.

The debate is consequently about global geographical literacy.

It asks whether humanity should continue using a projection optimized for sixteenth-century maritime navigation as the default visual representation of the twenty-first-century world.

That is a much larger question.

18. The Symbolism of the New Map

There is also a powerful symbolic dimension.

Maps are representations of reality, not reality itself.

But representations influence human consciousness.

A world map is perhaps one of the most powerful visual representations humanity possesses because it compresses the entire planet into a single image.

That image tells us:

This is our world.

If the representation is systematically distorted, the distortion becomes part of our mental model.

The UN initiative therefore carries a philosophical message:

The way we represent reality matters.

This is why the debate has attracted scientists, geographers, educators, African governments and political leaders.

19. But We Should Not Replace One Dogma with Another

There is an important caution.

It would be a mistake to replace the old belief—

“This is the world map.”

—with another—

“This is the scientifically correct world map.”

There is no perfect flat world map.

Equal Earth is better when the principal objective is comparing areas.

Mercator remains valuable for navigation.

Other projections can be useful for different purposes.

The mature geographical understanding is therefore not to memorize one supposedly perfect projection but to understand why different projections exist.

In this sense, the greatest educational achievement of the UN initiative may not be replacing one map with another.

It may be teaching people that every flat world map is a constructed representation of a three-dimensional planet.

20. The Deeper Question: Who Gets to Define the World?

The controversy ultimately raises a profound question.

Who decides how humanity sees the world?

For centuries, the dominant global map emerged largely from European cartographic traditions. The Mercator projection became deeply embedded in the educational and political culture of the modern international system.

Now African states, led by Togo and supported by the African Union, have successfully brought the question before the United Nations.

The significance is therefore partly cartographic and partly historical.

It represents a growing demand from the Global South to participate more actively in determining not only how the world is governed, but also how the world is represented.

The map is becoming a symbol of a broader transformation in international consciousness.

21. From Mercator to Equal Earth: A Change in Worldview?

The transition can therefore be understood at three levels.

Level One: Scientific

Equal Earth provides a more accurate representation of relative land areas.

Level Two: Educational

It can help students develop a more realistic mental image of continental size.

Level Three: Civilizational

It challenges inherited visual assumptions about which regions appear central, large and important.

The third dimension is the most controversial.

A map cannot by itself change global power.

Africa will not become economically stronger merely because it appears larger on a classroom map.

But correcting geographical misconceptions can contribute to a broader intellectual correction.

And intellectual corrections can influence how societies understand themselves and others.

22. The World Has Not Changed — Our Picture of It Has

Perhaps the most profound irony is this:

Africa has not become larger. Greenland has not become smaller. Russia has not lost territory. Europe has not shrunk.

The Earth itself has not changed.

Only the representation has changed.

And that is precisely why the story is so important.

The UN is not changing the planet.

It is challenging the visual convention through which billions of people have been taught to imagine the planet.

23. How does the New Map Affect India and Pakistan?

How India and Pakistan will look different on the UN-promoted Equal Earth map compared with the familiar Mercator map, the important point is that their political borders do not change at all. What changes is their relative visual size and shape.

India

India lies mostly in the lower latitudes, so the Mercator projection does not enlarge it nearly as much as it enlarges countries farther north.

On an Equal Earth map:

  • India will appear somewhat less stretched than on Mercator.

  • Its actual area relative to Europe, Russia and North America becomes more apparent.

  • India remains about 3.29 million km²; the map does not add or remove territory.

  • The Indian subcontinent as a whole becomes visually more substantial relative to the northern hemisphere.

Pakistan

Pakistan is even closer to the lower latitudes, so the same principle applies.

On Equal Earth:

  • Pakistan's shape and proportions change somewhat because the projection is no longer preserving Mercator's angular properties.

  • Its actual area—about 881,000 km² including the administered territories generally counted in Pakistan's area—remains unchanged.

  • Pakistan does not suddenly become larger territorially.

  • Its geographical scale becomes easier to compare with countries at similar latitudes.

The really interesting change: India/Pakistan versus northern countries

The effect becomes much more noticeable when you compare South Asia with countries such as Russia, Canada and Greenland.

On the conventional Mercator map, those northern territories are dramatically enlarged. On Equal Earth, they shrink toward their actual proportions.

So, visually, India and Pakistan don't gain territory; rather, the countries that have been greatly enlarged by Mercator lose their exaggerated visual size.

For example:

Mercator:
Russia → enormously large
Canada → enormously large
Greenland → enormous
India → comparatively smaller

Equal Earth:
Russia → substantially smaller
Canada → substantially smaller
Greenland → dramatically smaller
India → much more proportionate to its actual area

What about Kashmir?

This is especially important for India and Pakistan.

The Equal Earth projection does not decide the Kashmir dispute. The Line of Control, disputed territories, internationally recognized borders and competing territorial claims are separate from the mathematical projection.

A new projection cannot transfer Kashmir from one country to another.

However, how disputed territories are drawn on a particular map can still be politically significant, which is one reason several countries raised territorial-representation concerns during the UN debate.

Conclusion: Correcting the Map, Correcting the Mental Map

The United Nations' endorsement of Equal Earth is much more than a technical decision concerning cartographic projections.

It is a reminder that maps are not neutral windows through which we simply look at reality. They are human constructions governed by mathematical choices, historical circumstances and practical purposes.

The Mercator projection served humanity exceptionally well for navigation. It should not be condemned simply because it was designed to preserve direction rather than area.

But its dominance as a general-purpose world map has produced a distorted visual understanding of continental size.

The new UN initiative seeks to correct that imbalance.

Africa does not need to be artificially enlarged.

It simply needs to be represented according to its actual geographical scale.

The significance of the change can therefore be summarized in one sentence:

The United Nations is not changing the size of the continents; it is changing the visual language through which the world understands their size.

And perhaps that is the most important lesson.

A map does not merely tell us where we are.

It can also influence how we understand who we are, where we belong, and how we perceive the importance of others.

The world has always been round.

Now, perhaps, our maps are beginning to acknowledge it more honestly.
